2 Songs About Rabbits

Found two songs which contain the keywords "rabbit" and "headlight"

The first is by Thom Yorke and Josh Davis for a side project called U.N.K.L.E and its first album "Psyence Fiction" in 1998. The title is taken from a quote from the 1990 movie "Jacob´s Ladder."

Radiohead also happens to be one of Marilyn Manson´s new influences. The second is the song from "Eat Me, Drink Me" called "Are You The Rabbit?"

Compare both songs and try to figure out how much they are truly related...

RABBIT IN YOUR HEADLIGHTS

Thom Yorke :
I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Scared of the spotlight
You don't come to visit
I'm stuck in this bed

Thin rubber gloves
She laughs when she's crying
She cries when she's laughing

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away...
(Away....away....away....)

I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Christian suburbanite
Washed down the toilet
Money to burn

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away...

Sample from movie Jacob's Ladder :
If you're frightened of dyin' and you're holding on...
You'll see devils tearing your life away.
But...if you've made your peace,
Then the devils are really angels
Freeing you from the earth.....from the earth....from the earth

White worms on the underground
Caught between stations
Butterfingers
I'm losing my patience

I'm a rabbit in your headlights
Christian suburbanite
You got money to burn....

Fat bloody fingers are sucking your soul away.....
Away, away, away,
Away, away, away.

ARE YOU THE RABBIT?

I'm a kick stand in your mouth
and I'm the tongue slamming on the brakes
pull the choke in
pull the choke in
as hard as it will take.
All your pictures are getting dirty
I don't want anyone else's
hand on my gears
And I'll choke on
all the diamonds
like a vulture on your face

So ask yourself before you get in
I know the insurance won't cover this
Are you the rabbit
or the headlight
and is there
room in your life for one more breakdown?

You can't escape
Can't escape
all your demons
All you demons
"Watch out, watch out
for your lovers"

Faster, faster
faster-faster-faster
faster-faster-faster
I'm late, I'm late
And the hands on my clock
are starting to shake
We're on the line between
the devil's tits
and we've been driving on E.
I'm going to be wanted for this crime
"Well, at least you’re wanted"
She'll say

So ask yourself before you get in
I know the insurance won't cover this
Are you the rabbit
or the headlight
and is there
room in your life for one more breakdown?

You are an unmarked car
I can't remember where I parked you
but I love you
can't afford you
I'll take a cab to the funeral.
Faster, faster, faster-faster-faster
Faster-faster-faster
I'm late, I'm late
And the hands on my clock
are starting to shake.

You can't escape
Can't escape
all your demons
All you demons
"Watch out, watch out
for your lovers"

So ask yourself before you get in
I know the insurance won't cover this
Are you the rabbit
or the headlight
and is there
room in your life for one more breakdown?

2 Songs To Compare.

This time I chose to compare "War Pigs" from Black Sabbath from the album "Paranoid" and "Antichrist Superstar" by Marilyn Manson from the album with the same name.

In a way they make a loose reference to apocalyptical circumstances, including keywords like "judgement day" and "antichrist". Both address issues about politics and modern society, but they took place in different eras. We are still fighting wars out there, probably on other grounds.

WAR PIGS (1970)

Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord yeah!

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'til their judgement day comes
Yeah!

Now in darkness world stops turning
Ashes where the bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees the war pig's crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh lord yeah!

ANTICHRIST SUPERSTAR (1996)

You built me up with your wishing hell
I didn't have to sell you
You threw your money in my pissing well
You do just what they tell you
REPENT, that's what I'm talking about
I shed the skin to feed the fake
REPENT, that's what I'm talking about
Whose mistake am I anyway?
Cut the head off
Grows back hard
I am the hydra
Now you'll see your star
Prick your finger it is done
The moon has now eclipsed the sun
The angel has spread its wings
The time has come for bitter things (chorus)
The time has come it is quite clear
Our Antichrist
Is almost here...
It is done

2 Songs To Never Let The Music Die.

2 Songs To Never Let The Music Die.

I compared these two songs "American Pie" by Don Mc Lean and "Blank And White" by Marilyn Manson. Although they're not identical, some things are surprisingly similar.

"this'll be the day that I die."

"Today's the day you're gonna fucking die"

"The day the music died"

"Let's make sure the music's loud enough we won't hear it end..."

Can you spot other coincidences?

"American Pie" by Don Mc Lean, from the album "American Pie" (1971)

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock 'n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you're in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin' in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin',
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil's only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan's spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die."

"Blank And White" by Marilyn Manson, from the album "The High End of Low" (2009)

As if we need a why, I'll be it
And I'll the who for an Apocalypse how
If the world had one neck, my hands would be the where
And I would choke all of you down, I would choke all of you down
I would choke all of you down

Give me a picket sign
Make it blank and white
Like all those stupid teenage girls
We are gonna to need them where we're going tonight

All you fuckers vote beep, beep, beep
In drunk karaoke cars
If it's too dumb to see or say, you still sing it
And I'll just cue the applause

Let's make sure the music's loud enough
We won't even hear it end
Let's make sure the music's loud enough
We won't even hear it end

Give me a picket sign
Make it blank and white
Like all those stupid teenage girls
We are gonna to need them where we're going tonight

I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Today's the day you're gonna fucking die
I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Your demons wanna give you a proper goodbye

All you fuckers vote beep, beep, beep
In drunk karaoke cars
If it's too dumb to see or say, you still sing it
And I'll just cue the applause
If it's too dumb to see or say, you still sing it
And I'll just cue the applause

Give me a picket sign
Make it blank and white
Like all those stupid teenage girls
We are gonna to need them where we're going tonight

I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Today's the day you're gonna fucking die
I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Your demons wanna give you a proper goodbye

I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Today's the day you're gonna fucking die
I wanna celebrate, I wanna sell your hate
Your demons wanna give you a proper goodbye

Give me a picket sign
God is dead but God is still white
Shoot up the mall, the school
Or whoever wants to fight

Let's make sure the music's loud enough
Let's make sure the music's loud enough
Let's make sure the music's loud enough
We won't hear it end, end, end
Let's make sure the music's loud enough we won't hear it end.

Manson Through The Looking Glass...

And who doesn´t remember the Looking Glass from the "Alice" stories? These are several pictures I stumbled upon about Manson looking through the mirror.

To dream about mirrors is also about self-identity, who am I?

Bloody Hell...

This time I chose a recurring element in Marilyn Manson´s imagery which is blood, which can have different connotations, but in this case I prefer to handle it as the display of raw emotions; deep feelings or rage.

It did take me a while to figure this one out; the element of blood is recurrent, as you can see it in the album cover of Eat Me, Drink Me; the walls are decorated in red, very much like the scene of a crime or a horror movie. From another perspective, think about the circumstances that were surrounding Manson at the time; breakups, personal issues, etc. All of these can be interpreted in the bleeding...

On an additional note, the front cover shows a rip, like a torn picture, like the ones couples usually tear up when they break up.

The "M´s" are in a way simulating bleeding:

Here´s another example taken from the "Heart-Shaped Glasses" video where there´s the scene of Evan covered in blood on a bed. Here the concept changes slightly. It can also mean that this girl is full of life, as in a new relationship.

Now observe this watercolor "Everyday It Hurts To Wake Up". Already this is covering the subject of blood and the bed. This can be referring to heavy stress of emotional drain to the point that it wears out.

Compare also to this video still of "Apple of Sodom". The mannequin bleeds from her left side as she falls.

Recently "Running To The Edge Of The World" also included a blonde model drenched in blood, but this time the circumstances were different. There was rage and the desire to kill. Another tormented relationship?

"Blood-stained sheets in the shape of your heart, this is where it starts, this is where it will end..."

This is also a list of Manson songs that mention the word "blood"

"Son of Man": "blood and family"
"Negative 3": "give me your blood, your teeth"
"Let Your Ego Die": "and her pen is bleeding"
"Misery Machine": "blood is pavement"
"Eye": "I come, I bleed enough"
"User Friendly": "I've bled just to have your touch"
"Coma White": "Just bleeding like a polaroid that Lost all her dolls"
"Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes": "violence for the people they always eat the hand that bleeds"
"Lamb of God": "there was blood on the pavement"
"Coma Black": "my heart's a tiny bloodclot" and "Her heart's a bloodstained egg"
"Diamonds & Pollen": "America bled to death"
"Redeemer": "For the blood of man"
"The Bright Young Things": "So sharp, I'm bleeding From my Judas Hole"
"Doppelherz": "I'm a canvas that bleeds"
"Mind of a Lunatic": "The sight of blood excites me" and "Sit down, and watch you bleed to death"
"If I Was Your Vampire": "Blood-stained sheets"
"Just a Car Crash Away": "And the mouth-marks bled down my eye"
"EAT ME, DRINK ME": "The trees in the courtyard are painted in blood"
"Devour": "you're not crying this is blood all over me"
"Wight Spider": "and they can all drown in our blood"

Your turn, what do you think blood means here?

Daily Reflections: You and Me and the Devil Makes Three...

I decided to start this section to compare Marilyn Manson´s songs and words to some images displayed in the Tarot Cards. Here´s the first one I found; the Devil, number 15.

Now, lots of people get scared when they see the image of the Devil, but in fact in the cards it refers to different aspects of the human being. Notice it has a "sister" card which is "The Lovers" number 6.

The Devil card has as its ruling sign Capricorn, which also happens to be Manson´s actual astrological sign. Some meanings it has is that is a card of ambitions, temptations, addictions and all other things derived from the image. Compare these meanings with the lyrics of "You and Me and the Devil Makes Three". It would help you better if you played the song out loud.

"You And Me And The Devil Makes 3"

I'm just like rolling a stone up
A hill in Hades
If you want to lie with me
You're going to be a liar

Hell-flavored, I've got mood poisoning
You must be something that I hate
I'm just a prison of property
Buckets full of better misery
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
There's not a word for what I want to do to you

You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me
You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me
You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me

Murdercute happyrape
Murdercute happy, happy, happyrape
Killer
Murdercute happyrape
Murdercute happy, happy, happyrape
Killer
You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me
You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me
You and me and the devil makes 3
You and me
1-2-3
1-2-3
If you get in bed someone will fall in love
You and me and the devil makes 3
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
There's not a word for what I want to do to you
There's not a word for what I want to do to you

Phantasmagoria: Seeing Ghosts

This is one pic that surfaced in Marilyn Manson´s website some time ago when there was a lot of speculation about the release of Phantasmagoria, a supposed version of "Alice In Wonderland" with a darker take. But what I really wanted you to compare is the design of the position of Manson and the figure in the upper right hand corner. I intentionally manipulated the contrast on the "blue" pic but that´s just about it. There´s a blue spot that gives the illusion that there´s a spectre, or not? Mind you, I didn´t paint the blue spot! Enjoy watching ghosts...

A Hint of Blue; The Damien Hirst/Marilyn Manson Connection

OK, I´m not the kind of person who likes to leak stuff on the web. But there´s one thing I couldn´t help wondering.

A while ago a series of pics surfaced on Marilyn Manson´s My Space labeled "Bob Mussell (Crime Scene)". Actually they were two pics. However as far I researched Bob Mussell is a photographer who was worked with Marilyn Manson for quite a long time, he´s credited in "The Long Hard Road Out of Hell" autobiography. Please compare the pics below:

Furthermore, the installations shown don´t seem to be part of Mussell´s work. So then I stumbled upon another artist who had been around since the 90s known as Damien Hirst.

He has gained international fame for his signature installations which include the recurring use of stuffed animals, crates, skulls and several references to drugs. His art has been some categorized as "Shock Art" (compare to Marilyn Manson´s "shock rock")

Another clue that Manson might have taken some influence from Hirst is the recent watercolor provisionally named "Everyone Has a Blue Period" where there´s a blue and black skull smeared against a white background. Damien Hirst´s "Human Skull In Space" features a blue skull with surgical instruments.

Another hint? Compare these two close-ups I found where both wear hoodies and making faces...

Of course, can this be a sample of what we can expect from Marilyn Manson´s next album we´ll have to wait. Until then keep posted...

Deer Hunting

This next topic I chose is the one where we see a deer as a relevant character. So let's see how much these paintings are alike...

In Frida's painting "The Wounded Deer" (La Venadita Herida) symbolizes a significant period after a surgery performed in New York upon 1946 where she hoped she would get rid of her back pain, consequence of her spine accident.

The painting has several interpretations; the deer shape was inspired from her pet deer "Granizo", however here she has the head of a woman. It could represent her wounded by arrows and tied to an inevitable fate, even though there is a lit sky upon the distance. It could also represent her womanhood being challenged again and again. In dreams a deer symbolizes grace, gentleness and natural beauty.

In the case of Manson's deer however, it's actually a fawn. The interpretation varies, it comes from a series of pictures where the animal is either placed on his lap or beside him. One interpretation could be that is a representation of the lost childhood vs the present self which appears to be perverse. The other can also be a piece of fragility or purity that's not completely separated from the darker side. Likewise, most of the time it stands for innocence that Manson wants to walk away from.

As in the video "Tourniquet" and several others the fragile creature could have later turned into a woman and it falls to pieces every time it comes into Manson's life.

"Just another funeral, just another girl left in tears..." (from Eat Me, Drink Me "They Say That's Hell's Not Hot").

Although the meaning of deer differs in both images we can still find lot of visual parallels, can you?

The Death of Art or the Art of Death

It caught my attention that Manson mentioned just recently his interest on Frida Kahlo's work. She is often labeled under Surrealism , although she declared she was not officially part of the movement. Still, her paintings have rich symbolism and vivid colors, which are things that we might find in visions or dreams. For these new series of blogs I chose four different themes and compared Kahlo's work with some of Marilyn Manson's paintings.

DEATH

In such countries such as Mexico, Death is not always seen as a sign of tragedy. In fact, such celebrations as the Day of the Dead and the use of poems such as the "calaveritas", and the imagery of The Catrina show a more optimistic and sometimes satirical perspective. Frida's childhood was no exception for these traditions, as show here in the painting called "Niña Con Mascara de Calavera" (Ella Juega Sola).

Colors also play an important part in Kahlo's symbolism. There is a predominant blue which could stand for tenderness. This helps soften the subject of Death even more.

Now this other painting called Thinking of Death (Pensando en la Muerte) as you can see around her forehead a skull and crossbones symbolizing passing through. Again, this doesn't necessarily mean that the subject was being taken seriously but rather it was just a transition period, such as death and rebirth. Indeed, when it was done around 1943 Frida was suffering from the consequences of numerous operations and was confined to a bed. Thus, the background filled with thorny branches, a symbol derived from Pre-hispanic mythology points to a life of a different kind.

Moving on to Manson I found this clear example of a smeared blue skull, labeled as "Everyone Has a Blue Period". Now. in previous blogs we already described how many famous artists had a series of paintings in blue in order to evoke a particular feeling. Here, the skull I'd say it's clearly representing Death. In Western culture on the other hand this subject is most of the time feared and the color black is associated with it. The blue in this painting transmits a feeling of spirituality and transition as well. This could also be a way of taking something tragic into something much more powerful than the end of life.

It's no secret that Manson uses death to draw a line between what's been done and what comes next. On a personal point of view both artists handled it well.

untitled, presumably labeled "Everyone Has a Blue Period"

Jawbreaker...

Some amazing coincidences between these three images. One is a recent painting by Marilyn Manson provisionally named "Everyone Has A Blue Period", the poster art of "Final Destination 4" whose face is rumored to be Manson as well and the front cover of "Holywood: In the Shadow Of The Valley of Death".

Notice how they all focus on the jaw. This could probably refer to as the lack of self-expression, or freedom of speech. Like a caged bird unable to be heard...

Also notice that these were done in different periods of his life, around 2000, 2009 and 2010. What was that he couldn´t say?

Finding Alice; the Finished and Unfinished Tales

By now you may have felt the temptation to watch the latest version of "Alice In Wonderland" in its full 3D splendor, or you may have already watched it.

The "Alice" tales have been around ever since the 19th century. They were very exquisite and they still are, no to mention incredibly insane.

But let's face it; whether we like it or not you can't help the fact that both Wonderland and the Looking-Glass world are so full of oniric references despite the social and political criticism that are obviously known.

Alice takes a journey not to a fantastic world but to a dreamworld which sketches and distorts the darkest corners of her mind. Not that a seven-year old would be declared mentally ill because of the nature of these visions but almost everyone has had a bizarre experience when they go to sleep. It is here where we feel somewhat powerless if we don't know our inner selves too good and surrender to whatever comes our way.

While some movie directors have attempted to adapt "Alice" as it is, modeling their characters after the John Tenniel illustrations others have reinvented the concept and taken it to different levels using the same premise.

I'll not list all the adaptations out there but yes those that I consider commenting for its contribution to the Alice myth. So here we go down the rabbit hole...

- American Mc Gee's Alice (Videogame, Electronic Arts, 2000)

We get it. Alice is insane and now you can experience her madness and save her from herself. While they make us a huge favor to the author using the name Alice Liddell the rest of the plot involves her journey into recovery while being strapped to a bed. You won't want to attend this Mad Tea Party...

- Walt Disney's Alice In Wonderland (1951)(Film)

The heavy use of poetry and nursery rhymes could have been inspired Walt Disney to make a musical, colorful trip to Wonderland. Like Mr. Carroll, Mr. Disney was quite fond of Alice keeping in mind that the "Alice Comedies" were part of his earlier works, but it was until 1951 that this movie showed up after being revised again and again, including just Wonderland (apparently the Looking Glass world didn't seem appealing enough for Hollywood), the Queen of Hearts is all the queens put into one and a Cheshire Cat who sings the Jabberwocky song, (keeping in mind the purple kitty was never visited the Looking-Glass world to begin with)

Other than that it's a catchy adaptation, despite the bad reviews it got when it was first released mentioning the Alice stories were "americanized". Surrealism was still pretty hype back then and it is reflected in most of the scenes. Later on this would forever associate Alice with the psychedelic experiences, including the song "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.

- "Alice In Wonderland" (1903) (Film).

Wow, this little girl got pretty far for a low-budget silent film. The scene where Alice goes through the door is well reproduced. This version could have also been a reference for the 1951 "Alice". However this version remains more faithful because the underrated character of the Duchess appears, as well as Frog.

- "Alice In Wonderland" (1949)(Film)

I want to see this film so badly for one reason; Disney prevented this movie from being released in the U.S. and got away with it.

The French-based film mostly used stop-motion animation for its Wonderland characters and live action. Despite the huge efforts to bring this version into the spotlight it hardly had any success. Ironically at the same time it was released Disney's version flopped.

- "Alice in Wonderland" (or What’s a Nice Kid Like You Doing in a Place Like This?) (1966)(Film)

Well, this was a fresh new twist to bring Alice into the 60's era and this one-hour animated special did some very clever crossovers of Hanna-Barbera characters, as well as revamping old ones like the Mad Hatter (it was a girl!)

The movie was released with a catchy soundtrack featuring Sammy Davis Jr. and Scatman Crothers (a.k.a the cook from "The Shining")

- "Fushigi no Kuni no Alice" (1983-1984)(anime series)

For the first time Alice became an and an anime (Japanese animation). The girl portrayed as Alice retired her blonde hair and blue dress. Ironically, the storyline remains faithful to the original books, also rescuing interesting characters like the Jabberwocky unlike the Disney movie where he is reduced to a local legend. Though it's not full of that twisted aura we crave about Alice it's very suitable for kids, not to mention cute.

- "Alice In Wonderland" (1985)

Yikes! where do I begin? First of all Alice feels horribly alone in this musicalized version even around the presence of her older sister. The rest of the plot is familar (white rabbit, rabbit hole, eat me, drink me and all that good stuff...)

The good and the bad thing is that it draws a very visible line between Wonderland and the Looking-Glass world and for the same reason it was aired in two episodes on TV and it´s longer than expected.

The cast was beyond wild; Sammy Davis Jr. as the Caterpillar? This was technically the second time he was involved in an "Alice" movie. Ringo Starr as the Mock Turtle? It would have made more sense if he were the Warlus quoting the famous Beatles song. Pat Morita as the Horse? I bet old Mr. Carroll never saw that one coming.

But this is not the scariest part...it's where Alice is face to face with the Jabberwocky all by herself on a big old house! Part of my many childhood traumas.

- "Alice" by Jan Svankmajer 1988

OMG! This is by far the absolutely most twisted and hard to digest version of Alice I've seen so far.

While the film is incredibly surreal you can't help the fact that the White Rabbit has worse mental issues than the Mad Hatter (eating his own stuffing?)

If you really want to go deeper into the rabbit hole you won't wanna miss this one.

- "The Looking-Glass Wars" (Novel Series)

An awesome retelling of the Alice. Frank Beddor takes Alice to an epic level renaming her Alyss and she is the princess of Wonderland fighting against Queen Redd. Hmm, I'm thinking this is a possible inspiration for Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" or a possible rip off?...

- "Alice" (2009)(TV Series)

This modern day adaptation of the craziest girl in literature featured a much older version of Alice. She´s all grown-up and is determined to find the love of her life, like most of do through the internet. She comes across Jack Chance, unknowing he is the son of the ever so evil Queen of Hearts and takes her into a painful journey into Wonderland, through a looking glass, not to mention that the White Rabbit is evil and that the March Hare is a homicidal maniac.

This new world however is controlled by extracting people´s emotions and reselling them on the Black Market (but I swear they´re not drugs)

Apparently the girl is not the original Alice but yes "The Alice of Legend", the one who is chosen to free the slaves of Wonderland with the Mad Hatter as her untrustworthy guide.

I don´t see how Alice was meant to be the reincarnation of Moses and lead her people into the promised land. Although the plot lacks at times originality it´s full of science-fiction, suspense and fair CGI effects (loved the Jabberwocky, just like the John Tenniel version)

- Gakuen Alice (manga and anime series)(2003)

Just when you think you had enough tea and unbirthday parties along comes "Alice Academy" (Gakuen Alice in japanese) with a surprisingly great contribution; it wasn´t just a clever little girl, it was a gift.

And these so-called "gifted" children are taken into a top secret institute to train their "alice" which is a supernatural power that can manifest in several disciplines. The story revolves around the close but not ambiguous relationship between Mika and Hotaru and their forthcoming adventures into the Academy.

Highlights: The currency they use within the school is measured in "rabbits" and they get paid the same way for being so outstanding!

- Rozen Maiden (manga and anime series, 2002)

Alice is a doll! No, literally. This is one of the sweetest at other times creepiest version I´ve seen mentioning Alice, even it´s protagonist Shinku vaguely reminds you of her.

Apparently for these living dolls their objective is to fight each other in order to become the Alice; the perfect doll.

Highlights: Rozen Maiden dolls move through dreamworlds while playing the Alice Game, so there is a Wonderland inside everyone.

- Eikyuu Alice Rondo (anime series)

Though it´s hard to digest as Mr. Carroll´s literature this fantastic version focuses more on magical girls fighting to collect the pages of what is presumed to be the lost book of Alice In Wonderland known as "The Eternal Alice". It makes some sense since it was rumored that there was a third book that remained unfinished in real life.

Highlights: Bunny girls.

- Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll (no release date)

There are no official trailers of this short film people. This is what Marilyn Manson was considering to be the most eerie, twisted, demented version of Alice you´ve ever seen, or you may not see.

The film doesn´t use the Alice books as a plot, it is said that is roughly inspired by the poem by Lewis Carroll "Phantasmagoria" featuring the actual author haunted by the spirit of Alice. The project is long overdue. Pity.

Highlights: Alice has an alter ego, hardly seen something like that.

I could go all night going from one rabbit hole into another, but this is the best stuff I gathered so far. For those of you who are die hard Alice fans these are some of many productions you can never miss.

I´m currently under production of my own version of Alice called "Mad". I´ll provide an individual blog soon.
