American Mc Gee´s Alice Big Comeback...

One of our favorite, most twisted PC games of all time, American Mc Gee´s Alice is set to make a spectacular comeback in 2011 with Alice: Madness Returns; the game developer is Spicy Horse and EA is the publisher.

A sample of the story:

Eleven years ago a horrific fire took Alice’s family from her and left her terribly burned—and her mind terribly scarred. Afterwards she was confined to Rutledge Asylum, struggling to come to terms with her demons by slipping into her fantasy world of Wonderland. Now, after ten years, she has finally secured her release--yet she still bears the heavy psychological burden of that tragic event.


In Alice: Madness Returns, Alice is released from the asylum to a London psychiatrist’s care. As nightmarish hallucinations continue to haunt her and invade her reality, she seeks to understand her torment in order to recover herself. Her mind in tatters, she is unable to resolve the fear and neuroses prompted by her strange memories, dreams, and visions. Her relocation to London seems only to add to their number and intensity.

Perhaps she’ll do better in Wonderland. She always has. She travels there, seeking what the “real” world can’t provide: security, knowledge, and the truth about the past. But in her absence, Wonderland too has suffered. Something has gone horribly wrong, and now a great evil is descending upon what once was her beautiful refuge.

Can Alice save Wonderland—and herself—from the madness that consumes them both?

As you might remember, the soundtrack of the game released in late 2000 was done in great part by our very own Chris Vrenna, who is currently in Marilyn Manson, but it was also rumored for a long time that Manson participated in a piece of music for the game, thus the interest on Alice carried on in 2005 with the long awaited production of Phantasmagoria: The Visions Of Lewis Carroll.
 
Videogame site G4 got a chance to chat with the creators of Alice, American Mc Gee and R.J. Berg, and they mentioned briefly Manson and Vrenna´s collaboration for the soundtrack:
 

I think the first trailer for the first game said, ‘toys become weapons…friends become foes.’ What were the real life inspirations for that?


AM: For me, I came out of the world of Doom and Quake. I had spent time out running around with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. Manson had some involvement in an early piece of music for the first Alice game. And at the time even in San Francisco, people were very much, I guess you could say, living on the edge. It was like the Sixties, but in a sense a revival of that in the dot com days with people going out and exploring. And Burning Man had just started to take off. We were taking inspiration from all of that -- the moment in San Francisco and the past that I’d had in Texas with id Software. And then of course a big part of it came from my childhood. So which names will be unravelled for the new sound of this classic from the era of the CD-ROM? We´ll have to wait. Still, Vrenna´s participation was unbelievable. If you haven´t heard the score here´s a sample:

Daily Reflections: The World

This is the last of the Major Arcana deck; number 21, the World. It is visually beautiful; a naked woman or hermaphrodite dances above the Earth holding a staff in both hands, sourrounded in a green wreath observed by four different creatures. In ancient decks there was a human face instead of the woman. The four animals represent the symbols of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also resembles a vision of Ezequiel from the Old Testament. According to astrological interpretation the beasts are the signs of the Zodiac: Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio.

Even in some decks the wreath is a legendary basilisk that bites its own tail known as Ourobouros.

WHAT IT MEANS

Generally it represents completion. In ancient Kabbalah, it can be associated to the sephirot or sphere of light named Malkuth (kingdom) which is at the end of the Tree of Life and is considered the link between the material and the spriritual realm. An explanation of Malkuth:

Malkuth represents the physical world of matter, the final stage in the descent into matter, the lowest point on the great arc of evolution. If Kether has within it the idea of all created life, unfolded like the oak in the acorn, then Malkuth represents life's most complete expression. If Kether is the alpha of the universe, then Malkuth is its omega.

A passage from the Bible illustrates the idea of this last:

Gen 1:29-30 - "And Elohim said, 'Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat.' And it was so."

It's also been related with one of the last chakras, number 7 meaning knowledge. This is revealed as the ultimate state of consciousness, the end of a journey; identification with the Universe and Nirvana.

In Tarot readings the World can have the following meanings:

- Fulfillment, accomplishment, success, integration, involvement, prospering, satisfaction, good feelings, wholeness.

Compare the meaning of the World with an example from the Alchemic treatise named "Paradoxa Emblemata", "It Is Finished When Seven Are One," which represents the planets.

 "'The curse of God has entered the seven figures, so they are in conflict with one another.' Just as the human will was transformed 'into eternal sun, calm in God,' 'so in the Philosophical Work must all figures be transformed into one, into Sol. From seven must come one, and yet it remains in seven but in one desire, as every figure desires the others in love, so there is no longer any conflict.' (Jacob Böhme, De signatura rerum). D.A. Freher, Paradoxa Emblemata, manuscript 18th century."

IN MARILYN MANSON´S ART:

As always Manson does have many different levels of interpretation, but here´s one based on what we learned from the Tarot.

In Marilyn Manson's 'universe' back in 1998 when Mechanical Animals came out it included numerous alchemical references. Several messages were hidden and spread among the booklet and could only be seen placing the blue jewel box against the yellow lettering, revealing as green.

"I no longer knew if Coma White was real or just a side effect,"(sic) "Now children it's time for recess, please roll up your sleeves," "A sun with no planets, burning in circles", "Even machines can see that we are dead", and "In the end I became them and I led them/ After all none of us really qualified as humans/ We were hardworn, automatic and as hollow as the 'o' in God/ I reattatched my emotions cellular and narcotic/ From the top of Holywood it looked like space/ Millions of capsules and Mechanical Animals/ A city filled with dead stars and a girl I called Comawhite/ This is my Omēga."

Omēga is a loose reference to the last letter of the Greek alphabet, as well as to the phrase from the book of Revelation, "I am the Alpha and the Omega". (the beginning and the end). Thus, Omēga is the end.

Also, a hidden track was found when Mechanical Animals was played as an Enhanced CD.

Manson as the androgynous Omēga

We were hardworn, automatic and as hollow as the 'o' in God

The letter "O" could also symbolize the round space in the wreath as well the round space where the Mercury Symbol rests. The hollowness then could mean that there are no elements to continue the act of creation, like a void.

According to our own interpretation the "world" could be referred to "consciousness" or "completion" so then it could also be tied with the idea of unconsciousness or being comatose, thus Coma White.

Coma White was once described by Manson as a feminine figure that was to be the symbol of perfection. Ironically it is labeled as an "artificial perfection" made by man and not by the actual God. So in the end, Coma White represents some of the opposite values of the World, which are:

REVERSED TAROT CARD MEANING:

- Unchanging, inability to conclude a task, loss of purpose, imperfection, delay, waiting, lack of vision

In other words, Coma White is a destructive vice. And, ironically Omēga epitomizes this spiritual Apocalypse to bring change and transition into a new levels a destructive vice. And, ironically Omēga epithomizes this spiritual Apocalypse to bring change and transition into a new level; a new world, and higher level of self.

The stages of coma, compare to idea of "consciousness".

I chose a particular Marilyn Manson song that helps to illustrate the reference to the Tarot Card ; the opening track from Mechanical Amimals "Great Big White World". Omēga, a mysterious androgynous alien-like figure falls on Earth.

Ah, for those of you, Mother's Day is coming up this Sunday, but what better way for us to celebrate than with a little rock n' roll.

So I made these selections, obviously not leaving out Marilyn Manson. Here's a rare song that was meant to be included for Holywood (in the shadow of the Valley of Death) which was called "Little Child" (also known as Mommy Dear or Mon Enfant).

The song was unoficially released as a podcast into one minute low-quality, along with other B-sides to say such as "Jack Eats Dinner" and "The Compass And The Ruler" and a fourth song in high-quality named "Sick City".

Here are some of the lyrics:

Suspiciously some of the words resemble Pink Floyd's "The Wall" called "The Thin Ice":

On the other hand we have this song from Daniel Lioneye called "Lonely Road"; a side project from the Finnish band HIM. The original recording is considered as "stoner rock", slow tempo kind of thing. Here are the lyrics:

The song was released in 2001 as part of the album "The King of Rock and Roll" (you might remember the title track in Bam Margera's "Viva la Bam" series). Later on, acoustic versions were played by HIM's frontman Ville Valo with a somewhat blues style. So technically there are two versions out there, but I'd go with Ville's.

Marilyn Manson Reveals Collaboration with Naveen Andrews?

Surprisingly this morning I found Manson's My Space status with the following information:

Sayid, Sayid Jarrah or so to speak may be referring to the character played by actor Naveen Andrews in "Lost," which already has several seasons on the air.




What's Naveen got to do with music? Although he hasn't recorded much it's known that he plays guitar and sings as it is decribed above.

This confirms the rumors that had been unoficially going on the popular social network that Marilyn Manson had any connection or preference with the Lost series. In fact, it just could have been ideas that the rocker picked up while working with Naveen.

Hopefully more details become available, in fact you can get material of this remarkable actor playing guitar on You Tube. It has a pretty good execution style, reminiscent of classic rock more like what some bands are producing right now like Queens of the Stone Age, Crooked Them Vultures and Stone Temple Pilots.

15 Good (goddam) Reasons To Believe That Eat Me,Drink Me,The High End of Low and the Untitled Album Are a New Trilogy

WARNING: What you´re about to read is no way considered a spoiler for Marilyn Manson´s next album (because we don´t even have a clue what it will sound or look like). So this is why we came up with 15 good and goddam reasons that will lead us to believe at least that the last two records are tied by several circumstances and if it´s meant to be a trilogy then we already know what to expect; Enjoy!

1. The use of the spiral heart and the Cross of Lorraine.





Around the time the infamous Celebritarian Corporation was conceived (an elite of artists founded by MM) the symbol of the Cross of Lorraine was chosen and reshaped to resemble two symmetrical horizontal lines. This worked well to represent the dychotomy that has become somewhat of a trademark on MM's work.

The symbol was referenced from there on tons of times; in imagery and merchandise. However, rumor has it in the EMDM cover art there is a suspicious outline on the frames of the window that look like the cross. It's no secret as well that M wears the Lorraine ring most of the time.

The spiral heart was also created for the EMDM and used throughout the era. But in the High End of Low, you can still see it one of the pictures of the cover art as shown below.



Although it might not have been meant to stick until the very end in a way M still draws every single time he can.

2. The symbolism about blood and being bloodened









Back in EMDM had covered the eerie subject of vampirism (and no, it had NOTHING to do with Twilight) and blood was a constant symbol as in the first two videos , "Heart-Shaped Glasses" and "Putting Holes In Hapiness"

The mentions of this word continue on The High End of Low

"you're not crying, this is blood all over me." (Devour)

"they will all drown in our blood..." (Wight Spider)

"white cotton panties soaked and stained red..." (Into The Fire)

3. Key phrases: 6:19, here comes the Moon again, heart-shaped glasses, "high" and "low".







It's no secret that the presence of E introduced the entire concept of Lolita used for EMDM numerous times. However, very few people know the heart-shaped glasses are just part of the poster art and never inlcluded in any film version. But let's face it; they are still trendy (until we grow tired from them).

6:19 is referencing the song "If I Was Your Vampire" and apparently has no other meaning. But in this recent picture the number still haunts us, a possible sign?



The use of words like "high" and "low" have several can apply to a large number of concepts. In English slang it can mean the good times and the bad times, or when someone is extremely excited or depressed.

In the lyrics of Heart-Shaped Glasses this concept is used:

"that blue is getting me high getting me low..."

and in the song "High End of Low"

"we reached the high end of low..."

4. The sober ambients and tinted pictures

The photogrpahy style became more sober and minimalistic, using the shadow to literally flood the subject. You can see it here and in the stills of Phantasmagoria:






Notice how most of the time the females are surrounded by darkness, almost like ghostly figures, and in this recent one that's unoficiallly part of the new album.





Tinted pictures are used as well on High End of Low. As I covered earlier, the use of blue and red lighting is highly noticeable in EMDM and High End of Low as shown below.



5. Continuity between the new intro and "Running To the Edge of the World"

Last year we were given the chance to see "Running To The Edge of World" through MM's website (and was later unoficially distributed on You Tube), a somewhat soft snuff video which shouts "domestic violence" all over the place.

However, the new intro for MM's website revisits the idea, as if it were part 2...



6. Breakups, breakups and more breakups, or 'loss'...

wasn't EMDM's intro song "If I Was Your Vampire" referring to a relationship that ended, as in the lyrics below:

..."this is where it starts, this is were it will end, here comes the Moon again..."

7. The Phantom of the Paradise makeup and props (butcher's knife)

"The Phantom of the Paradise" is a 1974 musical film written and produced by Brian de Palma (director of such movies as "Scarface") an is considered somewhat of a mockery of many films, particularly the Phantom of the Opera.



8. The ghost of "Phantasmagoria" still lurking about...

So the movie was all about Alice anyway! The movie still doesn't have a release date but its style is used like in the pictures below.



Also, the masked "twins" appeared once in the MM's website intro a few years ago

9. The logo hasn't changed (yet)...

10. The presence of ERW

Call it coinicidence but it wouldn't make any sense to sing "Heart-Shaped Glasses" or "Running To the Edge of the world" without her, not to mention that she 'unofficially' collaborates with photographs, such as these:



11. Inmortality, inlcuded in topics and symbols such as vampirism (EMDM), spiral, swastika and the tursaansydän...

Like it was described below the spiral in the heart design resembles ancient celtic symbols which stand for movement, evolution and eternity as shown here:



One of the origins of the swastika goes back to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism






Its Finnish parallel could be the tursaansydän or "heart of Tursas" which stands for good luck and is also one of MM's tats



Notice also that tursaansydän was used in Lappish shaman drums






12. Keywords such as "blue" and the concept behind it.

As I explained in earlier blogs, the use of the Blue Period concept seems latent now, but you can still notice it in this pic and the blue skull painting...



Also some other keywords have been used such as "ocean", "blue moon", "a planet inside", so go figure.



13. Handwriting and writings on the walls.

M's own handwriting was used for the art of EMDM and it continues to be seen in the walls of his 'room' in the High End of Low album art.



14. The version 'sooner than expected', as stated in a recent interview.

These were the exact words "I think people can expect the album out sooner than expected," said in an interview with Metal Hammer in December 2009 just as he had announced his departure from Interscope Records.

As mentioned in Metal Hammer: "We have recently been released from our contract with Interscope Records, so much creative control was limited in decisions reports, music videos, things like that.

So we started writing new songs while touring, just as David Bowie did (Aladdin Sane), I think people may expect a new album much sooner than expected. "

As for the sound are concerned, this is what he said in 2009, "yes, I think it would be more badass. I think that will be more romantic, perhaps. ... Auto abusive

Remember sequels of films like "Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions" and "Back to the Future II" and "Back to the Future III"?

The time between the sequel and the third part was not so long, nearly a year. So here we are a year later. The High End of Low announced on this month in 2009. You really can see this new material? ...

15. Possible signs found on "Running To The Edge of the World"





Suggesting a possible continuation, in the mentioned video Manson is closing a diary or journal. Since this is the most recent video it gives us the feeling that someting is about to end.

Are these actual signs of the third and final chapter?

Level 4: Finding The Roots Of Celebritarianism

At this last level we now proceed to analyze the artistic legacy that Marilyn Manson wanted to continue, which is known as Celebritarianism.

Loosely based on the provocative art of Dadaism, Expressionism and Surrealism on Celebritarianism it can be manifested in various disciplines (visual art, movies, music, etc..) Common stock or philosophy which is "sell our shadow to those who stand in it".

BACKGROUND

The term surfaced around the time the Holywood album was released in 2000, although it says that it began to hatch since 1996, in the form of a secret site known as Celebritarian.com.

There are a couple of songs that refer to this movement, this is the case of "The Fall Of Adam"

"The Abraham Lincoln town cars arrive to dispose of our king and queen, they orchestrated dramatic new scenes for Celebritarian needs."

like "Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form of Flattery"

"Rebels Without Applause
I sell my shadow to Those
Who are standing in it."

It is on October 2005 when Celebritarianism begins to take shape in alternative or dummy pages, which were accompanied by a design based on the Cross of Lorraine, which illustrates the dichotomy that has characterized the visual language of MM.

THE CONCEPT

In the words of Marilyn Manson Celebritarianism is defined as:

"... A reflection on contemporary Western culture in which the celebrity is attacked by such violent means as death." According to him, with the figures of Jesus and John F. Kennedy, the world is accustomed to this glorification of death which leads the individual to a bizarre world, celebrities and powerful abstract."

The movement also in his point of is a recent form of anti-journalism. The members of the corporation are different artists, whose success has been proven, but they try to control what the media made public. The main idea is to work together in art projects that combine different style (couture, painting, Music, photography ... etc.)

More thoughts:

"Rather, to me, looking back at all the art I created, is the review of the desire of our culture to really enjoy - under detention or not - a guilty pleasure of the worship of death the cult of martyrdom, the promotion of fame at any cost; die when not enough people watching. It's an idea that has been implanted in the minds of people who have created a culture that generates the assassination of John F. Kennedy that spawns the Oklahoma bombing, which generates Harris and Klebold, which generates 9 / 11. People may well realize that they can get exactly what they want and are always willing to give. So in that sense, Celebritarianism realizes and recognizes that. "

IS CELEBRITARIANISM STILL HAPPENING?

There were key sites such as Hierophant Council (mansonusa.com, which is no longer available) that had a little more detail about the movement, while there are as mansonwiki.com databases to support the concept. Still, it is understandable that the movement brings together a small elite of artists, but does not rule out the possibility that there may be other members.

Here are other contemporary artists that although you can not call Celebritarian similarly pursuing a style similar to the philosophy of Manson.

- Damien Hirst and Tracey Hemin, belonging to the current Young British Artists that appeared in 1992, known for their "high-impact tactics" or shock by using waste materials as well as dead animals.

- Floria Sigismondi. Before being a filmmaker she started as a video artist and photographer for various projects. While not seeking a particular style she continued to be attractive to describe "entropic underworlds inhabited by tortured souls and omnipotent beings." You could say that his art has a degree of impact as interesting as for inclusion in the "shock art".

- Gottfried Helnwein, of Austrian origin. Known for his series of photographs based on his own childhood and the horrors of World War II, has collaborated with artists such as Marilyn Manson, Rammstein. Manson in his own words describes Helnwein: Gottfried Helnwein is my mentor. His fight for expression and stance against oppression are reasons why I chose to collaborate with me. An artist that does not provoke will be invisible. Art does not cause strong emotions makes no sense. Helnwein has internalized all that.

- Lowbrow art (or Surreal Pop) Arising from the decade of the eighties, the movement is based on the visual language typical of underground comics, punk music and street culture of the hot rod street art. Although its intent is not to impact some artists have resonated loud for its blend of animated characters and surreal environments. Known artists: Kenny Shcarf, Takashi Murakami, Gary Baseman and unofficially but more commercial animator John Kricfalusi, Paul Budnitz (creator of Kidrobot Munny), Simone Legno (creator of Tokidoki)

- Hyperrealism. Movement characterized as a "way of high definition art" that exaggerates the detail of the painting far beyond what makes a photograph. Emerged in the early seventies but resumed in the 2000s. Gottfried Helnwein also uses this technique.

- Haus of Gaga. Although defined as the design team behind Lady Gaga, the concept is very similar to Celebritarianism, and having several high-fashion designers, photographers like David LaChapelle, DJ Space Cowboy, among many others.
